The Paris-Malaquais National School of Architecture is located in the heart of the Saint-Germain-des-Prés district, opposite the Louvre, on the historic site of architectural education in France, which it shares with the Beaux-Arts School of Paris. This legendary site is a testament to French history. Since the early 19th century, it has seen generations of architects who have played a decisive role in the evolution of our living environment, both in France and around the world.
With a long history, Paris-Malaquais is a school firmly anchored in its time. Since its inception, it has cultivated an original approach to teaching, in which experimentation and research—led by our three laboratories—play a key role. From the earliest years, students are encouraged to develop their creativity and critical thinking, free from any dogma. This freedom is more necessary than ever at a time when, faced with the ecological emergency or the development of artificial intelligence, we must reinvent everything.
To meet these new challenges, the 1,000 students at Paris-Malaquais are supervised by nearly 90 permanent faculty members and more than 200 external lecturers with a wide variety of backgrounds: practicing architects first and foremost, of course, but also engineers, historians, philosophers, sociologists, urban planners, artists, and scenographers. These faculty members are spread across six multidisciplinary teaching departments, each with distinct yet complementary orientations. By associating with each department, students gradually learn to form their own beliefs.
Paris-Malaquais can also count on the extensive resources of PSL University (Paris Sciences & Lettres), of which it has been a component institution since early 2025. PSL covers all disciplinary fields and includes some of the most prestigious Parisian institutions, including the École Normale Supérieure, Mines de Paris, Paris-Dauphine, the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs, and the Conservatoire national supérieur d’art dramatique – not to mention the Collège de France. Within this prestigious community, our students are free to move around to familiarize themselves with other approaches and disciplines. They also have the opportunity to complete their studies with a second degree obtained at another PSL institution. They all benefit from the shared services (health, student life, documentation) offered by PSL. International outreach is also one of Paris-Malaquais’ strengths, having entered into more than fifty agreements with Europe, Asia, North Africa, the Middle East, the Near East, and North and South America. In the coming years, these partnerships are expected to strengthen, leading to genuine scientific and educational cooperation.
At the same time, Paris-Malaquais intends to play a central role in promoting and disseminating architectural culture, particularly through its conference programs. Furthermore, since the end of 2024, the Paris-Malaquais Architecture Gallery, a new space in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, has been hosting exhibitions of architecture and student work.
